I looked into what exactly the internal shower is, so that you don’t have to.
Tiktok is abundant in health, fitness and wellness trends. Many of which are questionable at best, yet have people following them in their millions.
The #internalshower has over 66 Million views on Tiktok alone, but does it actually work?

What Is The Internal Shower Drink?
The Internal Shower as it’s been named is a very simple drink. consisting of:
- 6oz water
- 2 tbs Chia Seeds
- Dash of Lemon Juice
Add the chia seeds and lemon to the water and leave for at least 15 minutes as the chia seeds will begin to soak up the water, expand and the water becomes jelly-like in consistency. Then throw it down the hatchet and wait
It’s said that this mixture will act as a natural laxative as the soluble fibre in the Chia seeds aren’t absorbed by the body but pass through the intestinal tract and helps you to poop it the other end.
Giving your digestion a so-called clearing out. Or so they say!
Now whilst there is nothing hugely wrong with the concoction. Chia seeds are known as a superfood, full of omega 3 fatty acids, plus taking it with a whole lot of water is good for hydration and for the digestive system itself.
Does It Actually Work?
As I came to find out, it’s not all plain sailing and why I wouldn’t recommend it to you either.
I’m someone who has something of a sensitive digestive system and can get easily, shall we just say….. bunged up.
Whilst chia seeds can have many benefits, they can also continue to absorb fluid even after digestion. So actually soaking up more fluid from your intestinal tract will further dehydrate and cause a lot of gas and bloating, as I soon came to experience.
After testing out the internal show drink. I waited, I waited and I waited some more.
My belly became incredibly bloated and sore, to the point of looking like I was about 6 months pregnant.
In fact, I have never really had a good time with Chia seeds and they always seem to bloat me and cause gas.
Even after drinking a ton of water, still nothing.
It was a full 24 hours of discomfort before there was any relief.
Conclusion
So along with the discomfort that I had experienced, I have also seen posts from people that are using it as a tool to ‘detox’ after the weekend.
This type of behaviour is concerning when let’s face it, you can’t just poop your bad eating habits away.
This drink is really just about adding more fibre to your diet.
So if you want some chia seeds then add them to your morning smoothie, on your salad or in overnight oats. Get fibre from making sure that you eat plenty of fruits and veggies.
And stop thinking that some ridiculous hack will be the answer to your health or weight loss challenges.
