In fact, if you are a midlife woman then I believe that working on gut health should be on all of our list of things we get to be mindful about. I know my stomach certainly tells me about it when it’s not happy and having moments of looking like I’m 9 months pregnant is yet another PCOS symptom that adds to the joys of this condition.
So I was certainly intrigued when the people over at Juvia reached out to me to see if I wanted to sample their gut health supplement which is said to help with bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and can support weight loss.
This product was gifted to me, so I did not pay for it. However, this is still my honest review of the product after testing it out over the last 6 weeks. I was not signed into a contract or under any terms and I am allowed to speak completely freely about this product.
I’ll be sharing my personal journey to see if it really does have the power to transform my somewhat sensitive digestive sysem and see if it can support weight loss.

Understanding Gut Health and Its Impact On Weight Loss and Health
Gut health plays an essential role in our overall well-being, and it can significantly impact weight loss efforts, but it isn’t a miracle fix that will have you losing weight over night. Losing weight and improving gut health is a slow transition and takes a little time.
The gut, also known as the gastrointestinal tract, is responsible for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It is home to trillions of bacteria, collectively known as the gut microbiome. The balance of your gut flora and having enough of the beneficial bacteria is essential for maintaining a healthy gut.
Your gut health plays a crucial role in your overall well-being. It affects everything from your digestion to your immune system and even your mental health. The gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” is home to trillions of live bacteria that help break down food, absorb nutrients, and fight off harmful bugs.
When your gut is out of balance, it can lead to a variety of health issues. Common gut health problems include bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, and indigestion. These symptoms can be uncomfortable, at times embarrassing and disruptive to your daily life.
Studies have shown that an unhealthy gut can contribute to increased fat storage, reduced metabolism, and a higher risk of obesity and even impact our mood. Our gut is the driver of overall health and so it’s important to take steps towards cultivating a happy healthy gut.
To achieve weight loss goals, it is also crucial to prioritise gut health. By improving the health and balance of your gut microbiome, you can improve digestion meaning less bloating and gassyness, enhance nutrient absorption meaning that your body actually absorbs the nutrients it’s eating, and support a healthy metabolism.
So using gut health protocols is key. I talk more about natural ways to support your gut health further down this article, but there are also times when supplementation can support the journey.
Introducing Juvia: What is it and how does it work?
Juvia started out as a digestive supplement for racehorses and was created by Professor John Hunter and Dr Rosemary Wearing at the Royal Institute Of Great Britain. The team at Juvia are currently undergoing clinical trials in conjunction with Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) after they discovered that the supplement had a positive effect on humans and not just racehorses.
Enzyme Rich Malt Extract (ERME) is the main ingredient in Juvia and it’s a digestive enzyme that also contains vitamins and minerals. It supports the breakdown of carbohydrates and supports the gut microbiome.
ERME has been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for consitpation, supports the diversification of gut bacteria and is shown to significantly reduce toxic chemicals in the gut. The team at Juvia have clinical studies that are currently ongoing, wich aim to look at its further impact on other gut health issues as well as body weight management.
Unlike other gut health supplements, Juvia is not a probiotic. Instead of introducing new bacteria to the gut, Juvia works to cultivate and support the good gut bacteria that you already have.
Their website reads:
‘Our active ingredient ERME consists of a range of enzymes, including amylases and glucanases, which help to break down carbohydrates. Digestive enzymes are vital in helping you to break down food so your digestive system can absorb them.
These carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and other simple carbohydrates early on in your digestive process and provide energy.
This means that there’s a lot less carbohydrates in your lower gut for the ‘bad’ bacteria to feed on and cause digestive troubles. When the ‘bad’ bacteria die off, a balance is reached in the microbiome and you’re free to live your life without worries.
By using digestive enzymes, Juvia provides an alternative approach to gut health. It may help restore the balance of gut bacteria, improve digestion, and alleviate symptoms such as bloating, gas, and indigestion.
So here I will share my own journey using Juvia for 6 weeks.
My Juvia Experience
A very short background on myself as I am someone who struggles with digestive issues. I have not been diagnosed with any condition, but I am someone who can be prone to gas, bloating and not-so-regular bowel movements if I don’t consciously work on it.
I have to be very intentional about hydration and also getting in enough prebiotic fibre to make sure I poop regularly, and if now, am not left with severe abdominal pain at times.
I am 41 years old have also recently been diagnosed with PCOS, so gut and digestive issues are common for people with this condition and so the diagnosis does provide a little relief as to why I have often been struggling.
But let me tell you, those moments of looking like I am 6 months pregnant are not fun!!
For these reasons, I will always want to work on better gut health. However like for many of us and even as a health coach, life can and does get in the way at times and I will never claim to be perfect.
Whilst I eat well 80% of the time, I am also someone who loves food and wants to be relaxed with my food choices at times and not let it dictate my whole life, even if I have to pay for it afterwards. But PCOS makes both digestion and weight loss more challenging and I often notice the impact of eating gluten and also higher carbohydrate foods.
Therefore I am always interested in testing out supplements and looking for the best gut health supplements that also provide natural ingredients to help alleviate health symptoms and I could certainly do with dropping a few pounds to feel more comfortable.
I started taking Juvia and waited to see what the impact would be. I had read on their private Facebook group that some people had a challenging first week, in fact, it states this on the bottle. As the ingredients impact the gut microbiome, there can be some disruption that can affect how you feel causing mild detox symptoms before the beneficial effects start to take place.
I certainly experienced this when I tried out Happy Mammoths Complete Belly Reset.
But I was pleasantly surprised that I did not experience anything like this with Juvia. In comparison, this felt very gentle.
Juvia comes in a bottle and is in liquid form. I had seen some people choose to add the dose to food, but I just took it on a spoon straight from the bottle. It’s not the best tasting thing in the world, but it certainly isn’t overly offensive. Made from wheat barley it reminds me a little of a beef oxo, I really didn’t mind it at all.
During the initial rebalancing phase, the dose is 1.5 table spoons twice a day with meals. Then the maintenance is 1 table spoon twice a day.
A one time purchase for 2 bottles is £59 for 60 servings, so will last you a month.
I was sent the two bottle package test out. There are also options for subscriptions which are a little cheaper once you know that the product works for you.
I really liked that they have an app that you can track when you take it and also mark down how you are feeling. However, I do wish that they would expand on that a little and allow a section to take notes so I could have been more specific in tracking any digestive problems as well as the improvements. It’s currently just an 4 option face emoji (see image below) Either feeling worse, same or better. I had movement when I wanted to track how I felt after certain foods and I think having more of a food diary option would help to give better tracking for the individual.
The other problem with this product is that it is in rather large bottles. They also need to be kept refrigerated once opened. So there were a few times when I was out for meals and so couldn’t take it with my meal. It just meant I would take it before going out or after, or just meant that I had to skip some days.
Throughout using this product I didn’t make any significant changes to my diet. I kept eating well 80% of the time, and have a little of what I fancy here and there.
They do advice taking out trigger foods during the rebalancing phase to help the gut re-establish balance, but I didn’t really do that. I just continued to eat as I normally would.
Over the first 2 weeks, I didn’t notice any significant changes.
Sometimes it’s had to say if I actually feel better, as I used to know what feeling good felt like. But the truth is with ageing and also now with the PCOS symptoms I tend to feel pretty rotten most of the time. I feel tired a lot, have headaches most of the time and experience a lot of bloating. But 2 weeks in but now I suppose I just feel normal, kind of like how I used to feel.
So yes this is an improvement!!
I’m continuing to track on the app and now 4 weeks in I’m feeling good in terms of energy levels.
I am going to the toilet very regularly and when I go it feels like a complete empty and poop seems to have a more dense consistency. Sorry, I know TMI, but when it comes to gut and digestive health then poop talk is part of it.
The biggest thing that I have noticed is that I haven’t had an ‘oh I look like I’m 6 months pregnant’ feeling for quite some time. I wouldn’t say my stomach is flatter but it’s certainly not as bloated, hard and painful as it has been over the past few months. Previously I would have these flare ups after eating certain foods or maybe it’s around the time when I should be on my period, though that is hard to tell as I haven’t had a normal cycle for over 18 months. But as you can see in the previous picture my stomach would just be huge, so hard and sore. Well, that hasn’t happened since taking Juvia.
I haven’t lost any weight but then I have been very relaxed with my diet and have been in an ‘I just want to eat what I want phase’. So to do that and still be feeling pretty good is a win. In fact, just writing this out has made me want to get a little more intentional with making some improvements to my nutrition.
A big motivator for me is not wanting my PCOS symptoms to worsen, so I get to use that as my inspiration to improve my nutrition going forward and see just what benefit I can get from this product.
And that’s a key element of any product you try.
Don’t expect it the be the magic savour, you are still going to have to work on your health and your nutrition if you want to see llife long results.
Always look at supplements as being a support to your health, rather than a magic fix to a shitty diet!!!
Factors such as age, stress, and poor diet can reduce the body’s ability to produce these enzymes, leading to digestive issues and so you should consider what your root causes are for your digestive issues and work on those alongside taking any supplements.
Juvia reviews: Real experiences from satisfied customers
When considering any supplement you must always keep in mind that biologically we are all very different and what works for someone may not for someone else. As I mentioned above, you want to work to discover your root causes rather than just looking for a band-aid to mask them. These factors will play a huge part in your results and effectiveness.
This is apparent when looking at the reviews.
Juvia has a tonne of positive reviews on their website and they also have a private Facebook group which I have access to as they are active in supporting users through using the product.
I scoured the internet for testimonials from people who have incorporated Juvia into their daily routine, and the results were overwhelmingly positive.
Many customers reported significant improvements in their gut health after using Juvia. They experienced reduced bloating and gas, improved digestion, and increased regularity. Some even reported a boost in energy levels and an overall improvement in their well-being. These were the biggest benefits that I experienced too.
One customer, Sarah, shared her experience with Juvia: “I’ve struggled with bloating and indigestion for years. Since I started taking Juvia, my symptoms have virtually disappeared. I feel lighter, more energetic, and my digestion has never been better. I can’t recommend this product enough!”
Another customer, John, said, “I was sceptical at first, but after just a few weeks of taking Juvia, I noticed a significant improvement in my gut health. The bloating and gas that used to plague me are now a thing of the past. I’m so glad I found this product!”
But there are also a lot of people who either haven’t seen results or have had to stop because the detox phase lasted too long, or was too intense and didn’t make them feel well. I can relate to that, as that is exactly how I was feeling when I tested out Berberine.
As I would say with any supplement is that what works for one, may not for another. You should always seek professional medical advice before making changes to your diet or adding in supplementation, especially if you are taking any kind of medication.
Incorporating Juvia into your daily routine
So, what is it about Juvia’s formula that makes it so effective?
According to their website:
JUVIA contains ERME™ (Enzyme-Rich Malt Extract), a unique natural ingredient derived from 100% sustainable barley. To the best of our knowledge, ERME is the first product to specifically address the causes and the symptoms of certain types of IBS by optimising carbohydrate metabolism and mal-fermentation.
Our scientists discovered that the active digestive enzymes in ERME help break down carbohydrates before they can cause symptoms such as bloating, stomach cramps, constipation and diarrhoea.
It’s noted on their website that IBS symptoms could be significantly reduced. However, the research on IBS syptoms also shows that they can also be reduced with the removal of trigger foods.
So essentially the ingredients in Juvia may support the gut in being able to deal with eating a ‘normal’ diet and reducing symptoms.
The secret lies in the carefully selected blend of ingredients and the science that supports their effectiveness
Juvia also contains digestive enzymes. These enzymes help break down food into smaller, more easily absorbed molecules, improving digestion and nutrient absorption. By supplementing with digestive enzymes, Juvia is meant to help your body can effectively break down and extract nutrients from the food you eat.
Juvia creates a powerful formula that addresses the root causes of gut issues. It helps restore balance to the gut microbiome, improve digestion, and alleviate symptoms.
It’s excellent that it can help to alleviate symptoms and help you to live your life without having to be as restrictive with foods of face the pains and discomfort that come with gut issues. But it’s important to support your gut in every way possible, so having good gut health practices to use alongside any supplement would help to reap the best rewards overall.
If you’re considering incorporating Juvia into your daily routine, here are some tips to get you started:
1. Start with the suggested treatment dosage: Start with the treatment dose, but you can always drop it down. if you experience negative symptoms.
2. Take Juvia with meals: To maximize its effectiveness, take Juvia with meals. This ensures that digestive enzymes are delivered to your gut at the right time to support digestion. Juvia does have a handy reminder on their app, as I did forget sometimes. But they do say you can take it after a meal if you forget.
3. Be consistent: Like any supplement, consistency is key. Take Juvia daily as part of your routine to reap the full benefits. Consistency will allow the ingredients to establish a healthy presence in your gut over time.
4. Listen to your body: Everyone’s gut is unique, so it’s important to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. Pay attention to how you feel after taking Juvia and make any necessary adjustments to find the dosage and timing that works best for you.
While Juvia is an excellent tool for improving gut health, there are other lifestyle changes you can make to support your digestive system. Here are some additional tips:
5. Eat a balanced diet: Focus on consuming a variety of whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These foods are rich in fiber, which promotes healthy digestion and add in fermented foods to your diet.
6. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining optimal digestion. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
7. Manage stress: Stress can have a significant impact on gut health. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as practising yoga, meditation, or engaging in regular exercise.
8. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can disrupt the gut microbiome and lead to digestive issues. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
9. Physical Activity: Yes exercise not only promotes a healthy lifestyle but it can also impact your gut microbiome. And outdoor exercise and being out in nature shows improved gut and human health.
Conclusion: Taking control of your gut health with Juvia
Whilst I did feel some relief with using this product, the changes were subtle and yet not having that intense bloating that I would have previously was a game changer.
Even over Christmas when my diet was certainly a lot more flexible, not having to have painful gas and bloating and that did make a significant difference to my life and how I felt.
I did not lose any weight when testing this product, but then I didn’t expect to and I certainly wasn’t trying.
When many people look for supplements for weight loss, hoping that they will be the magic fix, they are not. To lose weight of more specifically body fat, you must still be in a calorie deficit and no supplement will get you away from that.
Any dietary supplements should be taken alongside a healthy diet and good lifestyle practices for better digestive health and all-round health benefits and on any weight loss journey.
